Colombian military airplane crashes killing all 11 people on board

At least 11 people died in northern Colombia when a military transport plane crashed after reporting a mechanical problem, the country’s authorities report.

An investigation into the cause of the crash has been ordered, says the commander of Colombia’s air force, Gen Carlos Bueno.

Local media said the aircraft was struck by a lightning bolt after taking off on an intelligence collection mission from a base hundreds of miles away in Puerto Salgar.

President Juan Manuel Santos wrote in a tweet, “We are sorry for this bad accident…”

All of those killed were members of the Colombian air force.
