Colorado spirituality bookstore named Isis gets vandalized
Yes, ISIS Books and Gifts–which describes itself online as “part library, part apothecary and part temple”–is being targeted for a name that it’s had for over 30 years.
“Isis is the name of an Egyptian goddess, 3,500 years old at least, the goddess of women and healing and childbirth – basically the antithesis of everything the terrorists are about”, he said. Harrison and his wife, Karen, say that the New Age bookstore has been targeted by vandals because of the shop’s name. She said the most recent vandalism is likely because of heightened emotions in the wake of the Paris attacks that killed more than 100 people on Friday.
And no, she has no plans to change the name of the store. “Another time, someone came in with a large rock to destroy our glass front door, which had to be replaced”, Charboneau-Harrison said.
“I think that’s a good example of how intolerance get started, the name Isis has nothing to do with Islam”, a customer said.
CBS4’s Suzanne McCarroll asked Harrison if he’s considered changing the name of the store. But the two couldn’t be more different in philosophy.
“We feel it’s important to hold on to it and not give in to purveyors of death”, he said.
