Colorado Springs shooting: Police officers injured
Police said there was just one suspect.
From AP writer Sadie Gurman in Colorado Springs. The department says that the shooter is contained to a specific area but has not yet been apprehended.
The death of Garrett Swasey, 44, was announced “with great sorrow” by the Colorado Fraternal Order of Police.
Eleven people were confirmed injured, including five police officers.
“The officers were able to shout to the suspect and make communications with him”.
“Cops came flying through the parking lot, they nearly hit each other they were driving so fast”, Supercuts manager Denise Speller said.
President and CEO of Planned Parenthood Rocky Mountain wrote on Twitter, “At this time, our concern is for the safety of our patients, staff and law enforcement”.
The official said Friday the officer was with the University of Colorado in Colorado Springs.
Mayor John Suthers told reporters, “This is a awful, bad tragedy that occurred here in Colorado Springs today”.
A shootout and standoff between the gunman and officers had been going on for hours Friday at the clinic.
A police officer was among the dead, he said, while nine others – among them five police – were wounded, though none seriously.
In Boston, police stepped up patrols in front of the Planned Parenthood clinic on Commonwealth Ave as a precaution.
“It’s not usually a busy day for us, and no one is panicking or anything”, Pelosi said.
Planned Parenthood Arizona issued the following statement regarding the incident.
The gunman brought additional “items” with him to the clinic; those items are being treated as possible explosives, requiring extra caution as officers work to secure the scene.
For several hours, the firing of a long gun was the only indication police had that the shooter was in the building, Buckley said.
There is no further information on the suspect or what his motive was for the shooting, said Lt. Catherine Buckley, a Colorado Springs police spokeswoman.
The motive remains unclear.
There were earlier unconfirmed reports that he may have targeted a nearby bank, but Buckley said that was not the case.
