Colorado State 90, Portland 74
CSU struggled from the field for the first time this season, shooting just 32.2 percent (29-of-90) from the field, including 12-of-41 from the three-point line. Hooper Vint added 13 points and nine rebounds, and Terry Winn scored 12 points. Guards Lee Moore and Earvin Morris led the Miners (6-0) with 28 points apiece.
Abilene Christian used a 13-3 run to make it 50-38 midway through the second half and cruised from there. Colorado State shot 31 for 58 from the floor (53.4 percent).
Artis dribbled calmly down the court, then passed to Morris, who drained the tying 3-pointer with 20 seconds left to force extra time. Instead, they came out firing, as Moore hit both of his 3-point attempts in the opening three minutes and the team made five of its first eight shots. Clavell canned a three to cut it to a one-possession game but could get no closer in the final minutes. Austin Cooke made three 3-pointers and finished with 11 points. Teammate Kay Felder had 21 points, while Jaren Lewis was the lone Wildcat in double digits, with 13 points.
“We’ve got a lot of things that we still need to get better at. I think we can learn a lot from this game though, and that’s the attractive thing about it. That’s a very good, well-coached Colorado State team and it’s a quality win for us”.
“I thought our team was challenged at half by the coaches to handle a situation they have never been in”, coach Larry Eustachy said after the game. Omogbo had 15 points and 20 boards.
With a 44-36 lead at the half, Colorado State (5-0) broke the game open with a 26-10 run to put the game out of reach for Portland (3-3).
