Colorado theater shooter gets life in prison
He was convicted last month of 24 counts of first-degree murder – two for each of the slain victims.
The jury deliberated for nearly seven hours since Thursday to reach its decision. Some had a grim face.
A verdict was reached Friday afternoon in the sentencing phase of James Holmes’ murder trial.
Death sentences must be unanimous in Colorado. “I don’t know if they could have been swayed or not”. She called it a life-changing experience.
July 16, 2015 – Holmes is found guilty on all 165 counts against him, making him eligible for the death penalty. The verdict took 11 minutes to be read at the Arapahoe County Justice Center in Centennial, Colorado. Official sentencing is scheduled for August 24-26.
He also thanked the jury for their service during the three-month trial. “I don’t think there’s any doubt that he got what he wanted”, the prosecutor said of the gunman. The deaths can not be answered by another death, and Holmes would be punished for the remainder of his days under a life sentence, she argued.
“The jury recognized that executing someone with severe mental illness is morally and legally indefensible”. They say he he listened to loud music through headphones when he shot into the audience to block out the screams of the victims.

In the video, Holmes confirmed most of the details of the mass shooting, including his weapons purchases and his plan to draw police and other first responders away from the theatre by rigging his apartment with homemade explosives. The defense showed jurors photographs of Holmes hanging out in the backyard with children from the neighborhood and playing in the surf near his home in California.
Holmes was also found guilty on 140 counts of attempted murder and will be sentenced on those charges at a later date.
June 19, 2015 – Prosecution rests after testimony from survivors and accounts from psychiatrists who interviewed Holmes. Ashley Moser, whose 6-year-old daughter died in the attack and who was herself paralyzed by Holmes’ bullets, also shook her head and then slowly leaned it against the wheelchair of another paralyzed victim, Caleb Medley.
