Colts extend Luck’s contract through 2021 with $140M deal
Obviously he’s going to be a ping-pong robot whenever he gets that first check. Well, Luck did not hit either of those absurd benchmarks.
Though expected – both sides have long declared a desire to work something out – Luck signing on the dotted line Wednesday is significant.
The Indianapolis Colts today announced their franchise quarterback has signed a five-year contract extension through the 2021 season, a deal that will make him the highest paid player in league history, according to an NFL source.
With this new contract, Luck will average $23.3 million in yearly salary over the next six seasons. Luck’s new deal vastly exceeds that yearly figure. This includes the remaining year on his current contract.
Luck is in prime position to push this envelope, if he chooses, based on his uniquely central role in the Colts’ recent success.
Luck had a career-year in 2014 as he started all 16 games and set single-season career highs in completions (380), passing yards (4,761), passing touchdowns (40) and passer rating (96.5). Previously, the largest guarantee to a QB was $65 million (Eli Manning and Philip Rivers).
It is also important to note this deal for Luck is not a five-year extension.
Team owner Jim Irsay revealed the new pact is worth $140 million over six years.
Earlier this year, Irsay said he wanted to get Luck’s deal done before July 4th.
Not only have the Colts invested $140 million in their quarterback, they spent four of their eight 2016 draft picks on offensive linemen to help bolster his protection.
