Colts Potential Price for Saints Sean Payton is 2nd Round Pick
Payton met with Saints general manager Mickey Loomis on Monday but nothing has been released and Payton won’t meet with the media until Wednesday. The Eagles would not be the only team interested if Payton became available, but it is still unclear if anyone would be willing to pay the Saints’ asking price. The New Orleans Saints have failed to make the postseason for the second consecutive season, and after a win in Week 16 against the Atlanta Falcons, finished 7-9. Per Ian Rapoport, the Saints are hoping for a 2nd round pick for Payton.
The Saints, under Payton, have missed the playoffs the last two seasons. He’s the highest paid National Football League coach.
Mutiple reports have connected Payton to a number of teams with coaching vacancies, including the Giants, Niners and Eagles.
Payton was the Eagles quarterbacks coach in 1997 and 1998 before bouncing around the NFC East as an assistant and eventually landing the head coaching job in New Orleans, where he’s been praised for his work with star quarterback Drew Brees. “If I feel the need to get you an itinerary, I will”, said Payton, who then cut off an attempted follow-up question.
“There’s no knee jerk reactions, “stated Brees”.
“There is a plan that is put in place, and typically that is everybody getting together, coming up with that plan and executing that plan together”. There’s not decisions being made behind closed door, excluding certain others. “I can’t be more clear”.
“Obviously, we have a strong relationship and a strong bond”, Brees said.
“Just knowing what the mind-set was a year ago, in regards to building – not rebuilding – but building the foundation for what would allow us the opportunity to make a run at it in the future”, he said. So I guess we’ll have to wait and see. I feel like Sean is a big part of that.
If the Saints decide to make a change at quarterback, Brees said he is pleased with his overall accomplishments with the team and would not have any regrets.
Brees ended the 2015 season with 4,807 yards passing with 32 touchdowns and only 11 interceptions.
It could cost the 49ers a second-round draft pick to trade for him from New Orleans. His helped the 49ers to their last Super Bowl, serving as offensive coordinator from 1992-94. He’s slated to be interviewed by the Cleveland Browns on Thursday.
