Colts release Gosder Cherilus
That five-year contract guaranteed Cherilus $15.5 million, which has been paid, and had a total value of $34.5 million, but Cherilus’s play was never quite up to that standard once he arrived on the roster.
Cherilus was reportedly on track to be back for camp, but GM Ryan Grigson had concerns about his recovery process due to his injury history.
But the 31-year-old Haitian struggled with injuries last season and was put on season-ending injured reserve in December.
Now, the Colts will likely turn to starting left guard Jack Mewhort to start at right tackle.
Of course, those who have been following the Colts over the offseason already knew that Cherilus’ status as the starter was very much in doubt.
“Colts released OT Gosder Cherilus, a big-ticket free agent import from a couple years ago”, Breer tweets. He started 29 games, including two playoff games, in 2013.
When that happens, the Colts will have a new man in Mewhort trying to solidify the right edge of the Colts offensive line.
With Mewhort now expected to be the starting right tackle, the ripple down effect across the offensive line will be something to watch at camp.
At left guard, returnees Lance Louis and Hugh Thornton have both been starters for the Colts. The real question now is the interior of the line, as there is now a hole at left guard (in addition to the questions already there about the center position).
According to Kevin Bowen at Colts.com, he’s been prepared for this move for some time. And with Cherilus’ release coming before the start of training camp next week, it’s safe to say that the Colts expect Mewhort to be a significant upgrade at the position.
