Comcast to launch new Streaming Video Service
But it still has a major limitation. Furthermore, unlike the popular Sling service, users will only be able to Stream content inside their home.
The move underscores how Internet service has usurped traditional cable TV packages as Comcast’s fastest-growing and most important service.
The channels can be watched through an app installed on their personal computers, smartphones and tablets without a cable subscription. It will offer access to a library containing on-demand films and shows, and supports TV everywhere and a cloud DVR.
If you’re a Comcast broadband customer and you want to stream “America’s Got Talent” and “Game of Thrones“, Comcast has a new option for you.
On the sign-up page for Stream, under “live TV”, network logos from Fox, Univision, The CW, ABC, CBS and NBC are included. Which is something interesting, seeing as you don’t get your local sports channels with Sling TV, yet.
Television is still a relatively new medium in the grand scheme of things, but in the past few years TV as we know it has undergone several radical shifts.
Comcast has made available a $15 per month plan for those who want network channels without a full cable bundle. Comcast isn’t even offering the service on set-top boxes, such as Roku or Apple TV, so the restrictions are aplenty.
But despite those early drawbacks, Stream represents a major shift for Comcast: they recognize that the way we watch TV has changed, and they are adapting with the times.
Stream does come with a DVR service that can store 20 hours of video.
Since Stream will be IP-based, and is delivered over the company’s managed network, you can be sure that at least some competitors will see this as a net neutrality problem. Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime and a good old-fashioned antenna offer more choices with greater access and at a much cheaper rate.
If it takes off, Stream could help Comcast keep some of the revenues it loses when customers downgrade to Internet-only plans and then turn to other services for their programming.
“Stream will be available to our Xfinity Internet customers for only $15 per month and will first launch in Boston at the end of the summer”, Comcast wrote.
