Communist group members in Milwaukee to ‘support revolution’
Clarke said that the officer in the shooting of feared of this life and was confronted by an armed individual, but Vox notes that it is not clear if Smith actually aimed a gun or shot at police following a traffic stop.
The victim – or, more accurately, perpetrator – was reportedly shot while pointing a handgun at a police officer.
The Milwaukee unrest has taken on a more explicitly racist cast than other riots after officer-involved shootings, in yet another new low for the anti-police movement that has roiled our cities in recent years. Court records identify Smith as black.
Smith was accused in a shooting a year ago and charged with recklessly endangering safety, a felony.
It’s unclear why both charges were dropped. Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke appeared on FOX Business Network’s “Varney & Co.” to share his thoughts on the uprising, which he labeled a “riot”. “Don’t bring that violence here”, said Kimberly Neal, one of Smith’s sisters. The officer has not been identified, but the department says he is Black and has been an officer for three years. Both here and in another stunning tearful interview – wherein he displays his brother’s hide carry permit and argues he was killed for being a black man with a gun – Sedan tells a hard truth: You’ve got a city rioting because “We’re losing loved ones every day to the people that’s sworn to protect us”.
“He was a ladies’ man”. I’m looking at somebody has to go to work tomorrow and their bus shelter is face down on the ground. “He was out here living his life”, Smith’s godmother, Katherine Mahmoud, told the Journal Sentinel. “You see anger, just the anger and the frustration of a community that has suffered atrocities and oppression on behalf of what they deem to be the police oppressive system, that has never seemingly been held accountable for taking the life, like the young man said, of their loved ones”, Muhibb Dyer, a community activist and co-founder of the organization Flood the Hood with Dreams, told Democracy Now. “And no matter what the circumstances are, his family has to be hurting”. While Manney was sacked from his position, he did not face any charges for the murder, and Milwaukee residents staged Black Lives Matter demonstrations to protest his impunity. At least four businesses were burned down in the protests that stretched into Sunday morning, leading Gov. Scott Walker to activate National Guard troops in case violence persists. One protester was shot as Sunday rolled over into Monday. But the there was no widespread destruction of property.
