Companies compete for online customers on Cyber Monday

The high-octane online sales pace of Thanksgiving weekend is spilling over into Cyber Monday, with early tallies looking strong.
While Black Friday is the biggest shopping day of the year for brick-and-mortar locations, Cyber Monday is king when it comes to online sales. ADI is basing its forecast by tracking 80 percent of all online transactions at the largest 100 retailers in the U.S. The market analysis firm predicts that this year Cyber Monday sales will reach up to $3.36 billion.
As a result, it is no longer a day where shoppers look for electronics only or deals they missed during Black Friday.
The shopping week isn’t over yet – 49.4 million US adults (20 percent) plan to shop on Cyber Monday, a record high for the shopping day.
The data highlights the waning importance of Black Friday, which until a few years ago kicked off the holiday shopping season, as more retailers start discounting earlier in the month and opened their doors on Thanksgiving Day. Forbes reports that Cyber Monday is expected to see $3.36 billion in sales this year. The best-selling item on Amazon’s site since Thursday has been its Echo Dot smart speaker for $40, offering a $10 saving.
Analysts are not sure how today’s spending will stack up. They add that holiday shopping season could ring up to $117 billion. Desktop visits made up the remainder of the total, ADI said.
“As big as the event or the weekend has become, it’s substantially muted for the fact that all of the people are buying online”, Mark A. Cohen, director of retail studies at Columbia Business School, told The New York Times. The term was used to define the spike in online sales the Monday after Thanksgiving.
The technology firm predicted that overall 2016 online sales in November and December for retailers will increase by almost 14% from a year earlier.
But she still hopped online Monday to check out the deals.
