‘Compton’ tops box office for 3rd week; ‘War Room’ surprises
And thanks to a third consecutive week atop the Hollywood’s scorecard, “Straight Outta Compton” has earned its place in history as the highest-grossing music biopic ever, according to a report in USA Today.
In contrast, writer/director/star Joel Edgerton’s thriller The Gift continued its fantastic run with another $3.1 million over the weekend, bringing its total gross so far to almost $36 million. Luckily this has a low investment from TWC, with a budget of just $5 million.
“For the Kendricks, the dialogue is ongoing”, said Rory Bruer, Sony’s distribution chief.
This is a movie to go see if you want an extraordinary blessing.
“The Kendrick brothers’ films have an authenticity with this audience”. “When we pray biblically, strategically and specifically, we position ourselves to maximize the impact of our praying and to more readily see God glorified through the answers”. The reason: faith-based films tend to draw a crowd, especially on weekends where studios take a bath and release films they figure won’t obtain a strong per-screen average.
“War Room“, a Sony movie aimed at religious audience, debuted in the second place with 11 million dollars in ticket sales. The metric gauges audience interest based on data from social media, online and mobile traffic, and advance ticket sales. These aren’t “faith-based” films.
Alex Kendrick said there have been a number of stories from theaters who have been showing the film. The rap biopic about the early days of N.W.A. pulled in an impressive $13.2 million, pushing its domestic total to $134.1 million.
Though most of the “Compton” cast is relatively unknown, the characters they played have had a fan following for years.
U.S music producer and rapper O’Shea Jackson, also known by his stage name Ice Cube, poses during the French premiere of Straight Outta Compton, in Paris, Monday, Aug, 24, 2015.
The film’s grassroots efforts helped negate overwhelmingly negative reviews – War Room scored just a 27 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
In third-place this weekend was “Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation” from Paramount Pictures.
Opening at #4 was Owen Wilson’s disappointing No Escape with $8.3 million.
On tap for the weekend we have The Transporter Refueled and Robert Redford starring in an adaptation of Bill Bryson’s non-fiction best seller, A Walk in the Woods.
The gender breakdown for the film was fairly even. Audiences gave the film a B-plus on CinemaScore.
Whereas “We Are Your Pals” received misplaced within the shuffle of a historically quiet interval for the film enterprise, Dergarabedian stated, “Struggle Room” used its late-summer, little-competition launch date to its benefit. The top five was then concluded to the sequel of the latest horror movie, Sinister 2. It earned a whopping $11 million in revenue, even though it opened in a mere 1,135 locations. It’s still going to be a hefty loss for Warner Bros., with a likely final domestic gross of around $45 million. It co-stars Emily Ratajkowski (“Gone Girl”) and Wes Bentley.
