Categorized as a “moderate tornado” by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, an EF-01 tornado features wind speeds between 73 and 112 miles per hour, and contains enough force to “peel surface off roofs; mobile homes pushed off foundations or overturned; moving autos pushed off the roads”, according to NOAA.
The fire chief said that 39 homes were damaged, but only one sustained serious damage.
The Concord Municipal Light Plant reported that 1,013 customers were without power originally.
Joe Dellicarpini, at the weather service, said there were a “considerable amount of downed trees”. A large tree and barn were heavily damaged or destroyed along with equipment and vehicles. Jenna McNicholas, a Concord resident, said the storms caused trees to fall around her house and crash into her porch.
According to the NWS, the twister was on the ground for three minutes starting at 10:03 a.m. Clean up is expected to take up most of Monday.
The NWS said drought conditions may have played a part in the damage.
Trees were uprooted and some had the tops sheared off.
