Confederate Flag is Removed in South Carolina
The flag is coming down 23 days after the massacre of state Sen.
Two other South Carolina governors, Republican David Beasley and Democrat Jim Hodges, have attempted to take down the flag, which was first flown from the top of the Statehouse dome in 1962 in defiance of federal desegregation efforts. They handed it to a black trooper who brought it to the Statehouse steps. The governor clapped when it was handed to the archivist. They want to say it was for states’ rights.
“Will people still wear the symbol on their T-shirts or fly it from their homes?” She signed the legislation Thursday.
Howell told News Channel 6 it’s about time South Carolina leaders removed the Confederate flag from the state house grounds. “Yes I did and I’m very proud of it. That flag is on state grounds and the difference is this flag is on private property so the owners of this property have every right to fly that flag”.
The flag was raised over the Capitol dome in 1961 to protest against integration.
“And removing this flag from out front is not going to do anything to change this nation”.
While the national debate continues, the debate over South Carolina’s flag has ended.

Though there’s been a divide in whether or not the Confederate flag should be lowered, the removal of it during Friday’s event was met with cheers and chants of “take it down!”.
People gathered outside to watch the flag come down.
They saw ended an era when the flag came down at 10:09 a.m.
The flag is used to honor Confederate war dead and is embraced by many white Southerners who say it symbolizes Southern and ancestral pride.

Outside the Capitol, people who supported taking down the flag vastly outnumbered those who were upset about its removal.
The NAACP is holding its annual convention in Philadelphia on Saturday, and Brooks said in a statement on Thursday that it would consider an emergency resolution to lift the boycott of the state.
At the Statehouse on Friday morning, flag supporters were vastly outnumbered, but some were present. He said he had an ancestor who fought on both sides of the Civil War. “I’m just so happy to be here to witness this”, she said.
