Confirmed: OnePlus 5 will be discontinued very soon
It has brought out a flagship device at half the flagship price. OnePlus has already done this twice and it seems that, at least according to OnePlus India general manager Vikas Aggarwal, it all makes flawless business sense for the company. Now, the company plans to discontinue the previous version, the OnePlus 5.
OnePlus 5T, the latest “flagship killer” phone from Chinese smartphone maker OnePlus will be launched in India today. The OnePlus 5T takes advantage of one of the most powerful and energy efficient platforms on the market, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835.
Aggarwal is very much confident in this strategy, as he believes that being a company which focuses on the premium segment of smartphones, their phones must compete with the now available flagships in the market. The latest smartphone does not boast of a lot of updated specs. Starting with the launch of the OnePlus 5T, OnePlus will no longer target benchmarks with performance modes that do not represent day-to-day usage. According to the IDC, OnePlus smartphones are becoming the preferred choice of Indian consumers in the premium segment over big brands such as Samsung and Apple. OnePlus does have its own stores in Bengaluru and Delhi now, where consumers can get a hands-on experience with the company’s devices. It is a tradition of OnePlus to discontinue the old variant with the release of the successor. He added “Yes, some fans and users will be disappointed”.
“We are not looking to launch a mid-range device just to expand the market share, but concentrating on the premium end market”, he said. The offline sector will be limited to providing a more hands-on experience and the company’s partnership with Croma and stores in Bengaluru and Delhi help to provide that experience. This also means that given the fact that the OnePlus 3T had been sold out in the festive season previous year, the 3T has now been discontinued. The 64 GB variant is priced at Rs 32,999 and the 128 GB is priced at Rs 37,999.
At least for the time being, you can get the OnePlus 5T with little to no hassle from your local OnePlus e-store.
The new OnePlus 5T comes with a range of new features and specifications over the handset that it is replacing. It sports Face Unlock feature which the company says is based on advanced facial recognition algorithms. For selfies, both the phones have EIS, 16-megapixel camera with a 1-micron pixel Sony IMX 371 sensor and an f/2.0 aperture.
