Confirmed: Southampton line-up to face Vitesse – Caulker starts, Rodriguez on
The Saints are in town to play Vitesse Arnhem in the second leg of their qualifying match for Europe’s second tier competition, but scenes of happy fans mixing together turned ugly when violence broke out.
It was a positive end to the day after unsavoury clashes between fans beforehand, with police storming in after glasses, chairs and punches were thrown in the city centre.
Ronald Koeman is to go under the knife after rupturing his Achilles but the Southampton manager will be on the bench against Vitesse Arnhem on Thursday.
The area was left strewn with debris – broken bottles, plastic cups and chairs – in the wake of the disruption.
Welcomed by a standing ovation from Saints fans, he came close to repaying them with a stinging 30-yard drive shortly before Denys Oliynyk nearly latched onto a low cross from close range. Onwatcher says police didn’t stop group & trouble flared up.
Daily Echo online understands that while Dutch fans continued to drink in bars police took to turning everyone away, regardless of whether they were football fans or had been drinking. Not sure if anything happened in fanzone.
It is a convincing advantage that has seen one bookmaker price Saints at 1/250 to progress, but manager Koeman will not be letting his foot off the pedal.
One eye witness Tweeted: “That were Feyenoord fans”.
Vitesse handed Koeman his first job in management during the 2000-01 season, but he allowed little room for sentiment as Southampton swept the Eredivisie club aside, completing the job on Thursday after taking a 3-0 lead to the Netherlands.
“After four minutes, it was a fantastic goal for Graziano and you know then they have to make five and it’s nearly impossible”, Erwin Koeman said.
“We are continuing to liaise with local police and will take relevant action against those involved”.
