Congress blames Modi for dragging Sonia to court
India’s Congress Party president Sonia Gandhi, front right and her son and party Vice President Rahul Gandhi, left, speak to each other before addressing media upon their arrival from a court in connection with a corruption accusation in New Delhi, India, Saturday, Dec. 19, 2015.
After getting bail from the court, the Gandhis reached the Congress headquarters at 24 Akbar Road, where they addressed a brief conference.
Sources said that a team of Special Protection Guard (SPG), Border Security Force, and anti-bomb squad has been deployed at the Patiala House court premise here.
The court will next hear the case on February 20.
“The ruling party is using proxy litigation to target Congress leaders”, Mr. Singhvi had said on December 8. “Truth shall prevail”, Vadra said in his Facebook post.
“We will continue to fight for the poor of the nation and will not take a step backwards”, Rahul Gandhi said.
Sonia Gandhi, along with Rahul Gandhi and three others, are to appear in the Patiala House court for hearing in the case, on a petition by BJP leader Subramanian Swamy.
The accusations against the Gandhis and some of their supporters come from Subramanian Swamy, a BJP member.
The legal battle has sown further bitterness between the Congress and Modi, who had vowed a “Congress-free India” even before he crushed the Gandhis in an election a year ago.
“Congress is united in support of Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi”.
In 2012, Swamy filed a complaint before the courts alleging that Congress leaders were involved in cheating and breach of trust in the acquisition of AJL by YIL.
“Today we had appeared before the court with a clean conscience”.
“The accused are reputed persons having deep political grassroots and there is no apprehension that they will flee”, the magistrate noted while granting them bail on furnishing personal bond of Rs 50,000 each and one surety.
Swamy first filed the case against the Congress bosses in 2001. The two leaders then approached the Delhi high court seeking a stay.
In the complaint the leader has accused the Gandhi of acquiring the real estate worth thousands and crores which belongs to the defunct newspaper National Herald.
