Congress stage protest in Guwahati for recalling Assam governor
Congress’ demand for recalling Acharya came close on the heels of chief minister Tarun Gogoi’s tirade that the acting governor’s “Hindustan is for Hindus” remark has exposed his “communal” mindset.Gogoi also alleged that Acharya has been “acting more like a RSS pracharak” than as a governor, and demanded his removal soon.Acharya however, later clarified that his “Hindustan is for Hindus” remark has been misquoted.
GUWAHATI: The ruling Congress in Assam has given one month time to the Centre to recall state’s acting governor P B Acharya for his alleged “Hindustan is for Hindus” remark recently.
Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Anjan Dutta said that Acharya should be recalled immediately for protecting sanctity of the constitution.
“We strongly believe that continuance of PB Acharya as governor of Assam with such ulterior motive will shatter the social fabric of our country”. It threatened to stage demonstration in front of Raj Bhawan here every day if Acharya is not recalled within the deadline. However, no invoice relating to that is slated to be launched through the winter session of parliament which began right now (Thursday).
“The BJP had claimed that it’ll grant citizenship/refugee standing to Hindu Bengalis staying in Assam”. “He must be arrested under the National Security Act and legal action must be taken”, Haq said. The Congress-led Assam government had urged the Centre to frame a policy for granting asylum to people who have fled religious persecution or discrimination and taken refuge in India.
Gogoi had submitted a memorandum to then prime minister Manmohan Singh in April 2012, pleading that Indian residents who needed to flee because of spiritual persecution shouldn’t be handled as foreigners on humanitarian grounds.
Dutta said the Hindu Bengalis – who had moved towards the BJP earlier – were now moving away after they realised that the BJP was just telling lies. Dutta also said that the Congress will contest all the 126 assembly seats in Assam, where state elections are due in 2016.
