Police arrested a man in connection to the bomb threats made at local Jewish community centers and the Anti-Defamation League headquarters in NY, sources said Friday.
Thompson is facing a charge of cyberstalking, which carries up to a five year prison term. Prosecutors believe Thompson made only eight of the threats, including one call to the national Anti-Defamation League headquarters in NY, as part of a larger harassment campaign against an ex-girlfriend.
A Jewish community center on Mercer Island was shut down Monday night after police received reports of a bomb threat. Since the first wave January 9, there have been a total of 100 bomb threats, according to CNN. A criminal complaint filed in federal court in Manhattan indicated that Thompson was trying to “harass and intimidate” an unnamed victim with whom he had a relationship.
According to the investigation, the alleged threats Thompson made were apart of a campaign aimed at someone he used to date. Information on an attorney for him wasn’t immediately available.
“We are confident that local, state and federal law enforcement are doing everything in their power to catch the perpetrators and bring them to justice”, Anti-Defamation League Regional Director Nancy K. Baron-Baer said in a statement.
Manheimer, who noted at Tuesday’s council meeting that she is Jewish, made the remarks just before the City Council unanimously passed a resolution denouncing threats to people of Jewish Faith. She sent an antijewish bom threat in my name.
The FBI, NYPD and NY state police “informed us arrest made in bombthreat vs ADL & several other Jewish institutions”, ADL director Jonathan Greenblatt tweeted.
Bomb threats are only one part of a renewed wave of anti-Semitism in America, other examples include vandalism, harassment, and online trolling.
Thompson is also a former journalist who was sacked from the Intercept previous year after he was accused of fabricating several quotes and creating fake email accounts to impersonate people, one of whom was the Intercept’s editor-in-chief, Betsy Reed.
