In honor of the 25 anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act, House Minority Whip Rep. Steny Hoyer (D-MD) released a statement Friday reflecting on the significance of the ADA and his role in the law’s passage.
She says one of their goals for the future is to have people become more accepting of those with disabilities. The Partnership for Hope, the first of its kind in the nation, is now helping more than 2,700 people with developmental disabilities in 99 counties and the City of St. Louis.
Under Gov. Nixon, significant strides have been made toward greater inclusiveness and opportunities for Missourians with disabilities.
The ADA has also inspired the UN Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities, which Hoyer said he wants the Senate to ratify. “Getting people included in society means welcoming those folks with differences and including them in the community”.
“What that has done actually has helped people get into city government structures”, said Don Dew, Executive Director, Disabilities Research Center. Since enactment of the ADA in 1990, NCD has continued to play a leading role in crafting disability policy, and advising the President, Congress and other federal agencies on disability policies, programs, and practices.
