Congressman Messer Supports Paul Ryan As New Speaker Of The House
Newly elected House Speaker Paul Ryan said Friday he would turn to close aides to advise him in the Speaker’s Office.
“I wish Speaker Ryan the best in his new role and look forward to getting back to doing the people’s work”. He said he had no appetite for a floor vote on his speakership threatened by conservatives, who contended he was yielding to President Barack Obama in a government shutdown fight over Planned Parenthood.
“That said, Speaker Ryan has a hard job ahead of him, and I think it is important that we unite behind him and pursue policies that will lead to a smaller, less intrusive and more accountable federal government”.
Obama has deported record numbers of undocumented immigrants since he took office in what was widely considered to be a sign of goodwill toward Republicans so that he could later work with them to pass comprehensive immigration reforms. He said in a statement Thursday that he was disappointed with the outcome of the election, but had kept his promise to constituents that he would vote for Webster.
The final tally showed 236 votes for Ryan, 184 for Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi of California, the Democrats’ candidate, and nine for Republican Daniel Webster of Florida.
White House aides hope Ryan can figure out what Boehner never seemed able to do: Bring the small, but vocal, conservative wing of the House caucus along on major issues – or moving on without them if they hold firm. Democrats John Lewis of Georgia and Jim Cooper of Tennessee each received one vote, as did former Secretary of State Colin Powell.
“This is a guy who knows his stuff”, Krauthammer said.
Ryan began denying Rand earlier this year. “We are not settling scores”. No more favors for the few. “He died many centuries ago, but until the last trace of him is wiped out of men’s minds, we will not have a decent world to live in”.
Ryan asked fellow lawmakers to pray for each other.
Ryan’s swearing-in came nearly exactly a month after Boehner shocked the House by revealing his plans to resign from Congress at the end of October.
Ryan replaced Speaker of the House John Boehner (R-Ohio), who is retiring from Congress after roughly 25 years. “We will continue to be a strong voice to amplify the people’s voices, who deserve the opportunity to build the cornerstones of a middle class life: a good job, a roof over their head, a quality education, access to quality, affordable health care and a secure retirement”. Rep. Kevin Brady, R-Texas, is widely expected to take over for Ryan as Ways and Means chairman.
