Connor Cook Hit Hard, Holding Throwing Shoulder
The word on the street in East Lansing was how the Spartans often ran out of gas in the fourth quarter. And while Sparty can still win the Big Ten title, you really wonder if the already shaky wheels have completely come off. Maryland would be able to force a punt after an offensive holding call and Yannick Ngakoue’s 12th sack of the year. The USA defeated Canada in the gold medal game, as Powers led the team with 27 points and nine rebounds. The previous two contests went to the Huskers, but the Scarlet Knights are hoping to get their first win over Nebraska when they meet in Piscataway.
The former MI and National Football League quarterback has had his faith in Rudock rewarded because he is coming off perhaps the best game of his career. Connor Cook is one of the best quarterback prospects in the country, and Maryland shut him down. The sophomore tossed one touchdown, nudging the score to 45-7 at the 6:30 mark of the third quarter, but threw one interception (which Jeff Schoettmer returned 60 yards to the Miami 14, Williams scored one play later) and lost a fumble when the Hurricanes had a chance to chip into a 31-0 deficit just before the half.
The question many observers had this summer, then, was whether the conference could get its collective act together and actually cobble something respectable for itself in 2015-16.
So as Cook played the balance of the first half – and had a forgettable afternoon at 6-for-20 for 77 yards – Maryland’s defense tried and tried.
College Football 24/7 is doing sports fans a solid by making sure you have access to all the moments fans were raving about during the 11th weekend of college football play.
Now it’s Maryland again that stands in the way of a MI State team that still has plenty to play for.
What the loss means for Maryland: The Terps (2-8) are still searching for their first Big Ten win of the season and Mike Locksley’s trial as interim coach isn’t going well. Even though there’s no bowl game to play for, the Terps held their own against the No. 13 team in the country. There’s certainly something to be said for that. That continued as Hills went three and out to start the second half and it was only an amount of time before the defense would wear down. Powers also broke the MSU record for scoring average with a 21.9 points per game.
Coaches at IL, Maryland and Minnesota are still trying to demonstrate they should keep their jobs.
The Wolverines got a few of the help they need Saturday night when Nebraska beat MI State on a disputed call.
Right Now the MI State Spartans sport a record of 2-6, and have published a corresponding slate of 5-3 against the spread. They just didn’t hit the ball in the right area and shanked it. That can probably be improved upon. Valentine, who posted a triple-doubles in an exhibition game, is looking to develop into an elite ball distributor this season. Hills and Rowe combined to 17-for-35 through the air, which was good for a 49 percent completion rate. That’s the seventh time this season Maryland has completed less than half of its passes. He also threw a season-long 56-yard pass to Jake Butt and tied his season-high of two touchdown passes (and zero interceptions).
It was a 17-point win at the end of the day.
