Conor McGregor opens as underdog vs. Rafael dos Anjos
Conor McGregor and Holly Holm.
Rousey, then, was UFC’s Bantamweight Champion, and Holm just joined in 2014.
After McGregor came off a 13-second knockout of a reigning champ for ten years in Jose Aldo, one would think that he’d be the favorite heading into his lightweight debut and title fight against Rafael dos Anjos.
The UFC is set to announce that both fights will occur at UFC 197 in Las Vegas, Nevada on March 5, 2016. Holding both the Lightweight and the Featherweight title at the same time is unprecedented in the UFC history, and only a very elite list have held belts in two weight classes. His last two fights were against Anthony Pettis, who is now ranked No. 1 in the division, and Donald Cerrone, a MMA fighter who holds 15 post-fight bonuses, a record for in UFC and WEC history.
The only obstacle in McGregor’s way is dos Anjos.
Rafael Dos Anjos is primarily known for his submission wins.
McGregor may be making the move up to a heavier division for the fight on 5 March – featherweight [145lbs] to lightweight [155lbs] – but he shouldn’t have to worry about being smaller than his opponent.
Holm shocked Ronda Rousey at UFC 193 and with a rematch yet to be arranged it appears likely that she will take on Tate at UFC 197. Dismissed as McGregorian bluster at the time, King Conor rebuts that conventional wisdom in rushing to schedule a fight with Dos Anjos so soon after defeating his fellow countryman for the featherweight championship at UFC 194. “The Notorious” will surely have his hands full with the outstanding pressure fighting of dos Anjos.
In contemplating the scenario that ended up playing out as as reality, Edgar said on Monday that he wasn’t sure he’d wait around until July to fight again if he was asked to. No so much in terms of money – Holm vs. Rousey II will break the box office, but in terms of the champion adding a big name to her impressive combat sports resume. Although betting odds don’t mean anything when is comes down to what will actually happen in the octagon, McGregor will be pushed to the test in this fight.
