Conservatives, liberals and celebrities praise Michelle Obama’s speech
The former first lady, NY senator and secretary of state, will formally be installed as the head of her party in Philadelphia as she seeks to unite Democrats after a fractious primary against Bernie Sanders and to win a third consecutive White House term for her party.
In the final speech the official convention opening Monday night Sanders urged his very vocal, very unhappy supporters who were still calling for a “political revolution” to get behind Clinton to defeat GOP nominee Donald Trump in November.

Among those pledging support for Clinton will be the “mothers of the movement” – several black women whose children were victims of gun violence. “I am proud to stand with her here tonight”.
“And I saw their little faces pressed up against the window, and the only thing I could think was, ‘What have we done?'” she said to laughter from the convention hall.
Former Kentucky Gov. Steve Beshear said the odds of Clinton winning Kentucky in the fall are long, but any efforts on her behalf will help the party in the long run.
Journalist Julia Ioffe took a stab at Melania Trump, whose speech at the Republican national convention last week was revealed as partly plagiarized from an earlier speech by Michelle Obama.
As part of the push to bring Democrats together, following repeated shows of dissent from disenchanted Sanders supporters from the floor on Monday, the Vermont senator’s campaign is asking for his home state to go last in the roll call. President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden will speak Wednesday, along with Virginia Sen.
The crowd erupted with applause when Obama pushed back on Trump’s campaign slogan – “Make America great again” – saying, “Don’t let anyone ever tell you that this country isn’t great”. Tim Kaine, Clinton’s new running mate. “And that is our friend, Hillary Clinton”.
The stakes for him are particularly high following his much-criticized decision to meet privately with Attorney General Loretta Lynch in the middle of the FBI’s investigation into his wife’s email use at the State Department.
Obama said Hillary has “never quit on anything in her life” and made people wonder if that also might be a reference to her husband.
