Constable’s shot fatally struck girl, 12, during apartment eviction
A 12-year-old girl was shot and killed by a Pennsylvania state constable during an apartment eviction on Monday, January 11th, WHTM is reporting.
Trooper Robert Hicks said an altercation began just after 10 a.m. Monday at the eviction attempt in Perry County’s Penn Township. They had been ordered to vacate the apartment by 10am on Monday, which is when Steele arrived to put them out, police said.
It’s at this point according to a report via pennlive that the father allegedly pointed a loaded. 40 caliber duty weapon from its holster and fired a single round striking the suspect in his upper left arm. The bullet passed through Meyer and struck Ciara, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
The girl’s father, 57 year old Donald Meyer, flown to Hershey Medical Center with a flesh wound to his arm, is charged with aggravated and simple assault, terroristic threats, and reckless endangering. A neighbor, who said her daughter and Ciara played together, called the girl’s death “heartbreaking”. Police said Meyer opened the door and shut it. He then reopened the door and exchanged words with the constable before leveling a loaded. “Here’s a little girl that doesn’t even have a chance to grow up and live her life, and all because of this senseless act”. Such a sad world this is when an innocent child is shot and killed.
But officials in the nearby Susquenita School District say on their website that staff and students will be told about the situation on Tuesday.
Police said employees of the apartment complex were on scene for the eviction and witnessed the event. He will be held without bond in the Perry County Prison.
“Very kind, sweet kid”, the neighbor recalled to WHTM.
