Cook seems to reinjure hamstrng, but returns for Florida State
Cook is the first Florida State back to have two 200-yard games in a season since Greg Allen in 1981. A 72-yard touchdown run by Cook, a byproduct of running the option, gave FSU a 7-0 lead with 11:30 left. In last year’s game at Miami, Cook ran for 92 yards on seven carries, including a 26-yard touchdown that gave Florida State the lead. The last meeting, September 6, 2013, was a 21-16 UM win at Sun Life Stadium. If the Hurricanes are going to win this game they will need to limit Cook’s effectiveness.
Kaaya threw for 229 yards in the second half, 29 of which came on a pretty touchdown pass to Stacy Coley that put the Hurricanes on top.
Coley had seven receptions for 139 yards and Rashawn Scott added six catches for 108 yards. Florida State is the heavy favorite on paper, but as we know football is played on a field not paper.
On a third batted pass on a final drive against Florida State, Miami’s chances of pulling an upset of the Seminoles – and getting the first win over the ‘Noles of Al Golden’s tenure as Miami’s head coach – fluttered to the ground. Kicker Roberto Aguayo missed a 49-yarder when it glanced off the upright but keeps making the gimmee putts. The junior receiver looked healthy for the first time since injuring his hamstring in the first quarter of the season opener against Bethune-Cookman. The Hurricanes had a good second half, but Dalvin Cook’s 222 rushing yards were too much to overcome as Miami fell 29-24. Cook ran off tackle toward the right sideline, cut back inside and crossed the goal line from 23 yards out for the winning score.
Golson completed 25 of 33 passes for 291 yards and a touchdown. “We can’t let this linger”, Kaaya said of the Hurricanes’ implosion following last year’s loss to Florida State as they finished the season with three straight losses. Turnovers typically play a big role in rivalry games where emotions are running high. These next three games will go a long way toward define where Miami’s season is at.
Dalvin Cook needed just one play to answer the questions about his ailing left hamstring.
The Seminoles outplayed Miami during the first half, outgaining the Hurricanes 358-178, but they only had a 20-10 lead to show for it.
There are 17 active Miami Hurricanes on National Football League rosters who played under Golden at Miami.
And Miami may have a hard choice to make on Golden.
Florida State pushed the margin to 14-3 on another Cook touchdown – a 36-yard pass from Golson on the Seminoles’ second possession.
Cook did not practice on Monday as the 12th-ranked Seminoles ramped up preparations for Saturday’s game against Miami. Miami is led by Brad Kaaya, who has thrown for 1,094 yards and five touchdowns while Joseph Yearby has 424 rushing yards and four touchdowns.
Florida State once again marched down the field start the fourth quarter, but the Canes held the Seminoles to a 25-yard field goal by Aguayo. Only two are seniors – North Carolina QB Marquise Williams (69.2) is eighth and Georgia Tech’s Patrick Skov (63.8) is a graduate transfer from Stanford.
