Corbyn Gets Support of 84% Constituencies Ahead of UK Labour Party Election
The Jewish Labour Movement nomination of Smith followed a Sunday incident in which Michael Foster, a Jewish donor to the British Labour Party, likened Corbyn’s inner circle to ‘Nazi Stormtroopers’.
Smith has been endorsed by the GMB, the third largest union, and several other smaller unions, as well as the Labour Movement for Europe, which nominated the former work and pensions secretary by a proportion of 10 to one, citing Corbyn’s historic Euroscepticism and concerns about the party’s direction after the Brexit vote.
Mr Corbyn will promise to expand bus services to areas not now covered, to give councils franchising powers over their bus networks, and to allow them to set up “municipal bus companies”.
The increase is linked to July’s Retail Price Index measure of inflation, which was confirmed by the Office for National Statistics. June’s figure was 1.6%.
“If Jeremy Corbyn wins and something doesn’t dramatically change in the way that people are being treated online, and on the streets, I can’t imagine why I would want to stay somewhere where I am so obviously not welcome”.
“Today I am also pledging that under my leadership, the next Labour government, will enable all local authorities to have franchising powers over their bus networks and enable all local authorities to establish municipal bus companies”.
The Labour leader, who is battling against challenger Owen Smith to retain his job, has said he will “rebuild and transform Britain’s transport system”. The hike has prompted protests from the UK’s trade unions, with the Trades Union Congress (TUC) leading the “Action for Rail” campaign.
“Over the last 20 years we have gone from a majority of local candidates becoming MPs to the growth of a new political class becoming Labour MPs”, Mr Hedges wrote.
“We’re really grateful to have received so much support from constituency Labour parties across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland”, the campaign said. It knocked all the coverage of the rail fare rise and our public ownership policy off every news channel and every front page. “They should be on the same level as the general public”.
“When will the Government and the Department for Transport listen to those impacted by daft decisions and what is patently only good for the vested interests?”
“It has nearly reached the stage that to be a Labour MP you need to have worked as a political aide, or adviser, been a lobbyist or worked in the media or law”.
“With the train companies queuing up to slash jobs and working conditions, at a time of unsafe overcrowding, it is a scandal that they are getting yet another fare hike”.
