Cosby says 7 women who sued him made false accusations
Bill Cosby fired back Monday at seven women who are suing him for defamation, accusing them of making false accusations of sexual misconduct for financial gain.
The actor’s lawyers say that Cosby’s career and legacy have been tainted by his accusers and that their defamation lawsuit were intentionally filed just when he was about to return to television to star in a new series on NBC. “Mr. Cosby’s suit further states that defendants’ multi-decade old, false, uncorroborated, opportunistic allegations of sexual assault have caused and continue to cause him to suffer substantial injuries and damages to reputation, business contracts, shame, mortifications, damages to property, business, trade, profession and occupation”. Universities in New York, Wisconsin, Rhode Island, Massachusetts and Pennsylvania have also rescinded honorary degrees they awarded to Cosby.
The counterclaim Cosby’s lawyers filed also points out that “Despite the recent barrage of unsubstantiated accusations, Mr. Cosby has never been criminally charged nor found liable by any Court for any sexual misconduct”, according to E! Seven women – Tamara Green, Therese Serignese, Linda Traitz, Louisa Moritz, Joan Tarshis, Angela Leslie, Barbara Bowman – are suing Cosby for defamation after he hired a lawyer and publicist to deny their allegations, and it is this group that Cosby is now countersuing. One of the women, known only as Dottye, claims that Bill Cosby drugged and raped her in 1984 when she visited his apartment to audition for The Cosby Show.
Since then, more than 50 women have come forward to accuse Cosby of sexual assault or misconduct.
An attorney who represents the seven women, Joseph Cammarata, stated that he believes Bill Cosby is attempting “to shift the focus of this legitimate inquiry”. She stressed that his actions “should not deter courageous women from fighting the battle against him”. However he admitted in 2005, in 1976 of a woman have administered a sedative, because he wanted to have with her sex. “He demanded maximum compensation and punitive damages for the ‘campaign to assassinate Mr. Cosby’s reputation and character'”.
