Cosby seeking defence lawyer for Pennsylvania criminal probe
Jacobs, who represented Cosby in a review of another accuser’s complaint in New Jersey, reportedly said that he referred Cosby’s team to another Philadelphia-area lawyer.
In July, 35 of Cosby’s accusers appeared together on the cover of New York Magazine. The Philadelphia Inquirer first reported Tuesday on Jacobs’ involvement in the case.
Montgomery County District Attorney Risa Ferman won’t confirm her office is reinvestigating the complaint by ex-Temple University employee Andrea Constand.
However, she said in a statement, “Prosecutors have a responsibility to review past conclusions… when current information might lead to a different decision”.
At the time of the allegation, in 2005, the previous Montgomery County DA did not think that the government had enough evidence to proceed with a criminal complaint against Cosby. Should charges be filed, it would be the first time Cosby, 78, has faced prosecution on allegations from any of the more than 40 women who in the past year have publicly accused him of sexual misconduct.
The new hire, according to the Associated Press, swirls around the reopening of Constand’s original complaint that Cosby drugged and sexually abused her ten years ago.
In a 2005 deposition released in July, Cosby admitted under oath that he gave Quaaludes to Constand.
In a statement to People, Constand’s lawyer said she would be willing to cooperate in the new investigation. “She’ll do whatever they request of her”.
Legal experts have said, however, that Constand’s case may have grown stronger in the years since. Both are bound from discussing their allegations against Cosby by a confidentiality agreement they signed as part of a 2006 civil settlement with the comedian.
Fans of the comedian were shocked at the amount of women who claimed to have had sexual interactions with Bill Cosby. According to a report from USA Today on Wednesday, Bill Cosby seeks defense lawyer help.
Last week, he said Constand had lodged more serious sexual-assault allegations in the civil lawsuit than she had divulged to police.
He remembers investigating the case as a misdemeanor, rather than a felony.
