Costco Chicken Salad Linked To E. Coli Cases In Seven States
According to the Center for Disease Control, five people have been hospitalized and two of them have developed a type of kidney failure.
“Very quickly they noticed these people did have something in common”. Fourteen (88%) of 16 people purchased or ate rotisserie chicken salad from Costco.
Authorities are working to discover the source of the contamination as the investigation hasn’t yet identified what special ingredient in the salad is linked to the bacteria.
Before the E. coli cases in Minnesota, New York, California and OH were added to the outbreak, officials from the CDC reported November 12 that there were 50 cases in just OR and Washington.
The Shiga-toxin-producing E. coli O157:H7 is not the same strain that sickened Chipotle customers recently. “Most people who get sick from E. coli recover within a week; however, people with chronic conditions can experience much more severe symptoms that can include kidney failure”.
“Our rotisserie chickens are not implicated at all”, Wilson said.
This is not the first health related allegation Costco is facing in recent times.
Costco removed the chicken salad from their shelves Friday, but if the salad was bought before then, it may still be in homes.
“We’re pretty confident the path that everyone seems to be on is correct”, he said. All but two have reported eating the chicken salad made and sold by the retailer.
Affected states are California, Colorado, Missouri, Montana, Utah, Washington and Virginia.
Chipotle closed all of its locations in Washington and OR on October 30 and discarded all food before cleaning the locations and training staff on food safety procedures. He also said that the company has been helping in the investigation into the issue.
“I think we’re going to learn something important from both ultimately”, he said.
According to a report by Fox 17, the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment disclosed that four cases of the said bacteria have been reported.
