Cotto vs Alvarez in big middleweight fight in Las Vegas
After the win over Cotto, Alvarez stated in the ring during his post-fight interview that he would put the gloves on at that very moment to do battle with his friend and former sparring partner.
That didn’t happen Saturday night at the Mandalay Bay casino, but Alvarez may not have to wait long. He’s calling the shots with Mayweather retired now, and Manny Pacquiao set to return on April 9 for what may be his final fight before he dedicates himself to politics in the Philippines. Namely, this is yet another chapter in the Puerto Rican-Mexican boxing rivalry.
The fact that Atlas believes Alvarez looks drained at 155 lends credence to the argument he would have no problem facing WBA/IBF & interim WBC champ, Gennady Golovkin at the right and proper 160 lb limit; something he appears reluctant to do, claiming he isn’t a true middleweight. “He’s a great champion – but now it’s my era”. That organization said Alvarez must fight Golovkin or risk losing the belt, a belt Alvarez paid $300,000 for the right to win Saturday – something Cotto was unwilling to do.
The Mexican fighter came through with his promise during weigh-in, when he said he would put all his effort into the bout against Cotto. The two will meet in a middleweight fight on November 21 in Las Vegas.
As per the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC), Cotto is expected to take home $15 million While Alvarez’s official purse is $5 million.
After Alvarez lost to Mayweather in 2013, I was thinking how over-hyped he was but obviously when that fight was made slightly below light-middleweight he was dead at the weight. Oddsmakers give Alvarez the edge at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, though many experts have predicted Cotto to win the middleweight championship fight. Roach is gonna do a great job of having the right fight plan and having Cotto ready.
That slight maneuver took away Cotto’s angle for his money punch.
In Cotto’s corner, they unsurprisingly saw it as a closer fight with rematch potential. He went to Hall of Fame trainer Freddie Roach to revitalize his career, and has stopped all three of his opponents since. “It was a competitive fight”.
The stronger Canelo was fighting with more confidence as he found his range going into the later rounds, landing uppercuts and well placed body shots with extreme precision and preventing Cotto from using his signature hard left, a deadly weapon if unleashed. Fans still chant Canelo’s name. The performance against Cotto will surely draw more fans to his side. It was Golovkin’s pay-per-view debut and, though it didn’t sell in big numbers, the fight was a coming out bout of sorts for those not familiar with the undefeated knockout artist from Kazakhstan, who now lives in Los Angeles. While it may not be hardship for Canelo to melt down from the 170s to fight at 155, it’s definitely hard for a lot of other fighters to do that.
