Could Ryan Mathews see more touches for the Eagles after the bye?
Is the only power Kelly doesn’t possess deciding which running back is on the field for which plays?
“Duce is running the rotation”, Kelly said.
Still, the refrain from the locker room is the same: In Chip We Trust. “(W)hat has become abundantly clear over the first seven games of the season is that Mathews is a better option out of the backfield than Murray”, McLane wrote. But in a system that has limited Murray’s touches and production, Mathews has seen a few playing time, including a 24-rush, 108-yard performance against the New York Jets in Week 3.
Sproles is more of a pass-catching specialist and isn’t exactly a downhill runner between the tackles due to a slender frame.
The Panthers held Sam Bradford to 205 yards passing and sacked him five times, twice by Jared Allen, and reduced his passer rating from 69.8 to 41.4 under pressure. “He was moving out there”.
“I don’t know those guys’ rotation during the game, but I think Mathews-when he gets in-he does a good job”, linebacker DeMeco Ryans, who missed Sunday’s game with a hamstring injury, told Angelo Cataldi and the 94WIP Morning Show on Monday.
Then, when asked the fairly obvious question about why the Eagles stayed with the dud instead of going with the stud, Kelly said this.
“He said he didn’t think he was going to make it into the end zone”, Kelly said. “We used him a little bit but that’s really the status of the whole thing”.
On the running back’s two previous rushes, he ran for 22 yards midway through the second quarter and for a 63-yard touchdown with 9 minutes, 43 seconds left in the third quarter.
While Mathews wasn’t listed on the injury report last week heading into the Carolina game, he went into the Giants game the week before with a groin injury.
DeMarco Murray, the Eagles’ starting running back, finished the game with 18 carries for 65 yards. We’ve rarely seen them in Philly and certainly not when Murray has been handling the rock.
