Court extends police custody of Umar, Anirban by one more day
Delhi Police has also arrested JNU students’ leader Kanhaiya Kumar earlier this month on sedition charges, for allegedly making anti-national statements at the same event on February 9 in support of terrorist Afzal Guru.
The two Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) students were presented before the magistrate after expiry of their two-day police custody in a confidential location and the magistrate allowed Delhi Police to quiz them for one more day. JNU Student Union President Kanhaiya Kumar is also under arrest in the same case.
Earlier on Tuesday, Delhi Police had questioned JNU student Ashutosh along with Umar and Anirban.
The photocopy outlet is located in south Delhi’s Ber Sarai area and the owner is believed to have made copies of the posters of the February 9 event. The duo had returned to the JNU campus last Sunday after they went missing on 12 February.
“Today the court sent them to 14 days judicial custody”, a source said, adding that the proceedings took place in a makeshift courtroom set up inside a police station.
The police had issued a lookout notice on 20 February against Khalid, Bhattacharya, Naga, Ashutosh and Prakash. The investigation has been joined by Kumar with the Police.
The bench said Kanhaiya Kumar’s counsel has apprehended serious threat to his client’s life during production before the court for remand proceedings and for this reason, his bail plea was transmitted to the High Court by the Supreme Court.
Later, the case was transferred to Delhi Police’s Special Cell and their police custody was again extended by a day.
