Coventry bus crash: At least three people seriously injured as double decker
A police spokesman said: “An eight-year-old boy from Leamington, who was travelling on the top of the bus, died at the scene as a result of his injuries”.
The woman, who is believed to be from Nuneaton and aged in her 70s, was walking along the street at the time of the crash.
Five other people, including the bus driver, suffered minor injuries and are receiving hospital treatment, while a further person was treated and discharged at the scene.
Shoppers described mayhem as the Stagecoach bus lost control, crossed a pavement and smashed into a Sainsbury’s in Trinity Street, near the city’s famous Millennium Place sculpture.
“People were trying to get the driver out”.
‘This is a busy area of Coventry city centre and we hope to keep disruption to a minimum as our investigation continues; no-one has been arrested at this stage’.
Paramedics, police and firefighters were sent to rescue the injured, a few of whom became trapped on the top deck of the bus. It was absolute chaos.
He said: “I was getting a few food from the shop opposite and I heard a loud bang”.
He added: “We got the driver out through the window”.
“Broken glass was everywhere and there were a lot of young people at the scene just struggling to process what had happened”.
“It just missed me by one or two metres and after that it was absolute chaos, a terrifying scene”.
A spokeswoman for Sainsbury’s said none of its workers had been injured in the crash but was not able to clarify whether any of its customers were hurt.
A police investigation is now underway into the cause of the crash.
Emergency services said they expect to be at the scene for a few time.
A spokesperson for West Midlands Fire Service, which was called to the scene, said: “The thoughts of all of us are with those affected by this tragic set of events”.
