Cowboys add Sanchez as backup, keep options open with Romo
The Dallas Cowboys have announced the signing of veteran quarterback Mark Sanchez, but they have kept starting QB? Tony Romo remained on the active roster amid uncertainly on how long he will be out with a broken bone in his back sustained in a preseason game.
The Cowboys can put him on the injured reserve-return list, which would free up a roster while sidelining the 36-year-old for the first seven games.
The eight-week mark since Romo sustained the injury on August 25 at Seattle would be October 20, and he could possibly be ready by the October 30 game against Philadelphia.
At this point of his career, Mark Sanchez is an Internet joke, so it’s no wonder that combining him with meme makers favorite team to hate on, the Dallas Cowboys, brought out plenty of memes making fun of both.
The Cowboys said they would be in the market for a veteran quarterback as soon as backup Kellen Moore broke his right ankle in a training camp practice.
The fourth-round pick from Mississippi State finished the preseason 39-of-50 passing (78 percent) for 454 yards with five touchdowns and no interceptions. To be eligible for a return from IR, the player must be on the initial 53-man roster.
Rookie Dak Prescott will start in Romo’s absence, and Sanchez, who was cut Saturday by the Denver Broncos, will be the backup. He was spotty while playing the entire preseason finale against Houston, hurting his chances of getting claimed by another team.
