Cowboys finally out of playoff chase, lose 19-16 to Jets
Kellen Moore has replaced Matt Cassel as the quarterback of the Dallas Cowboys.
After faking a throw and stumbling when he tried to change directions, Cassel threw blindly to a spot where Darrelle Revis was by himself for an easy interception.
Thompkins’ clutch play down the right sideline and along the Jets’ bench set them up at the Dallas 26-yard line, and Randy Bullock followed with the decisive field goal three plays later to keep their playoff hopes alive.
With the Jets down, 13-9, Fitzpatrick coolly led a nine-play, 70-yard touchdown drive and connected with Decker on a 3-yard touchdown pass to give the Jets a 16-13 lead.
But with time running out Ryan Fitzpatrick picked out Kenbrell Thompson with a 43-yard pass that brought the Jets within field-goal range and Bullock made no mistake from 40 yards to secure a fourth straight win.
Washington, Philadelphia and the New York Giants are all 6-7 going into home games Sunday. After a strong performance, the defense let one long pass completion put the New York Jets into position for the winning field goal with only seconds remaining. He eventually threw a touchdown pass, his first one since his college days at Boise State.
“We’ve figured out how to lose them instead of win them”, Jones said.
JETS: PROBABLE: S Dion Bailey (ankle), TE Kellen Davis (wrist), WR Eric Decker (knee), DE Leger Douzable (ankle), QB Ryan Fitzpatrick (left thumb), T Breno Giacomini (hip, ankle), WR Jeremy Kerley (calf), C Nick Mangold (hand), WR Brandon Marshall (ankle), S Ronald Martin (groin), S Rontez Miles (Achilles), CB Dee Milliner (ankle), LB Calvin Pace (abdomen, knee), DE Muhammad Wilkerson (wrist), CB Marcus Williams (knee). Even with the rash of injuries that started with Tony Romo, Dallas has been in more games than not during a 2-10 stretch that killed the season.
The Cowboys (4-10) finally were eliminated from playoff contention with the loss.
The Cowboys came out aggressive on the game’s opening drive, using misdirection plays like an end around to receiver Lucky Whitehead that went for 33 yards. And despite struggling in the kicking game, the Jets managed to get the winning field goal.
Jets head coach Todd Bowles said: “It’s good to string some games together”.
Marshall caught four passes for 74 yards to give him 93 receptions on the season, breaking Al Toon’s single-season team record.
The Jets are opportunistic, too, forcing 20 fumbles and 13 interceptions this season. Dallas cornerback Terrance Mitchell, signed from the practice squad Friday, had his first career interception two plays later. However, that drive stalled out in the red zone and the Cowboys were forced to settle for a 27-yard field goal to put them ahead 3-0. For the second time in three weeks, the veteran quarterback rallied the Jets in the final period.
I’d love to tell you the Jets are going to go out and dominate their opponent every week.
