Cowboys Jeremy Mincey Ending Holdout, Expected To Practice Sunday
OXNARD, Calif. – When the Dallas Cowboys take to the field today for practice, defensive end Jeremy Mincey will be there. Mincey was slated to make $1.5 million this season but based on his production in 2014, he was looking for more. He has been hoping for a re-worked contract and the edges had been in discussions on a two-year deal. Mincey tried to send the Cowboys a message by skipping the first few days of camp but predictably gave in when faced with $30,000 a day fines.
While Mincey also wanted to add years to his deal, that’s unlikely to happen until after the season. You could argue that Randy Gregory won’t have a strong rookie season- particularly since he’s a better fit as a 3-4 outside linebacker as of right now- but the rookie with huge physical gifts is another source of competition for Mincey.
Last season, Mincey had 28 tackles and also led Dallas in quarterback pressures with 39. Hardy faces a four-game suspension to start the season for his role in a domestic violence case.
“He’s physically tough and plays hard”, Garrett said. Stephen Jones, the team’s executive vice president, said the two sides “probably won’t address that until after the season”.
Mincey is old and brings nothing to the table in run defense, but the Cowboys saw first-hand that he’s a valuable sub-package pass rusher. We played hard. We played tough. He flew through it without ever protectors, despite the fact that, like the Cowboys expect to simplicity him back to it. But he terminated… They Cowboys will ease Mincey into practice and could keep him out of pads.
Mincey engaged in a four-day holdout at the start of training camp and the Cowboys indicated that they weren’t willing to give into his contract demands.
It might make more sense for the Cowboys to play a wait-and-see game, since Mincey is stuck and will have to play in 2015 no matter what. According to a source, the Cowboys have reworked Mincey’s deal for 2015 and discussions will continue on a possible extension.
“I was willing to take the backlash, ” Mincey said. He’s a quality player, but he isn’t a star and, again, needs to remember that he was the one who signed that 2014 contract.
