Cowboys Randy Gregory wins suspension appeal, but status for season still uncertain
Gregory’s status for the 2016 season remains in limbo.
Reports earlier in the offseason indicated Gregory was set to be suspended up to an additional 10 games, but no official announcement ever came from the league.
FRISCO, Texas – Dallas Cowboys defensive end Randy Gregory has won the appeal of his suspension and will be banned for only the first four games of the 2016 season, a source confirmed to ESPN’s Dan Graziano on Sunday.
After some investigation, Tom Pelissero of USA Today Sports discovered that, while the four-game suspension was in effect, the 10-game suspension was by no means a thing of the past.
Per an NFL spokesman, the league would have no further comment on Gregory beyond what was announced on February 19 when the four-game suspension was revealed.
The NFL has not announced more than a four-game suspension for Gregory, and the league still considers his potential “4-plus-10”?suspension to be pending, according to the source.
The Star-Telegram, in its report that Gregory won his appeal, added that Gregory is still in rehab. He was placed on the franchise’s “did not report” list by the Cowboys before camp.
He is still in a substance abuse treatment facility, per a source. Another failed drug test would’ve resulted in a 10-game ban. The Cowboys selected him late in the second round with the 60th overall pick.
“He’s got gifts. He understands he has gifts, God’s gifts”, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said in May.
Gregory had to have failed multiple tests throughout his rookie year, as the first penalty beyond escalated testing schedules is a four-game fine. We want him to him to have the kind of career his gifts would allow him to have, which is an exceptional, exceptional football player.
