An Australian naval frigate has been re-routed to waters off New Zealand’s earthquake-rocked South Island, where defence personnel will help airlift stranded families to safety and distribute supplies.
But the IT specialist was blown away when thousands of viewers from all over the globe tuned in to see the damaging effects of two major quake that sent shock waves through the Island nation on Monday.
Hundreds of tourists and residents remained stranded in the town of Kaikoura and faced a third disrupted night after a powerful quake early Monday cut off train and vehicle access.
New Zealand has bit hit hard by Mother Nature this week, from the deadly Magnitude 7.8 natural disaster to the hundreds of powerful aftershocks, tens of thousands of landslides and of course hail, thunderstorms and flash flooding in our nation’s capital. Currently, two have been reported to have died while thousands are stranded in Kaikoura.
“Most of them are quite determined to continue their holiday – not just because they wanted to but as a signal of thanks to the New Zealand people”, he said. He says damage to buildings was less than expected.
Meanwhile, in Wellington several buildings damaged in the quake have been cordoned off because of fears they might collapse.

Road and rail links were disconnected throughout the northeast of South Island.
Ships from Australia, Canada, Japan and Singapore also are assisting with the recovery, according to the New Zealand Herald.
The Ministry of Civil Defence and Emergency Management said locals should move inland and find high ground immediately.
According to the reports, two people were confirmed dead in Monday’s massive quake followed by thousands of tremors.

Storms lashed the region on Thursday and seismologists were still recording hundreds of aftershocks: about 2000 have rattled the region since the initial tremor shortly after midnight on Sunday.
A spokeswoman for Federated Farmers of New Zealand told the site that many other cattle could be in the same situation.
