Coyotes sign captain Shane Doan to 1-year deal
Shane Doan has agreed to remain with the Arizona Coyotes on a one-year, $2.5 million contract, ArizonaSports.com reported Monday. He has spent his entire 20-year career with the franchise, starting when it was in Winnipeg in 1995, and is its all-time leader in goals (296), points (945) and games (1,466).
This season will be his 21st with the Coyotes franchise.
Doan, who turns 40 on October 10, scored a team-high 28 goals during a record-setting 2015-16 season, his highest total since 2008-09 and tied for the second most in his career.
The Coyotes had a disappointing 2015-16 season and missed the playoffs for the fourth straight year, but have a strong core of young players, led by Max Domi and Anthony Duclair, who are entering their second National Hockey League seasons.
“Shane is so passionate about our team and our roster. That’s his goal”, new GM John Chayka, said recently, via the Arizona Republic.
The deal could rise to $5 million after bonuses, per the website. Exact terms of this deal aren’t yet known.
Despite just three playoff appearances in the past 13 seasons, Doan has stayed loyal to the organization, spending 19 years in the desert, and one more in Winnipeg.
