Inductees: RHP John Smoltz (Lansing Waverly High), LHP Randy Johnson, RHP Pedro Martinez and IF/OF/C Craig Biggio. Which players have wrongfully been denied a chance at baseball immortality?
This weekend the Hall of Fame ceremonies in Cooperstown, New York begins on Saturday with the Induction ceremony on Sunday at 12:30pm. He also earned four ERA titles and recorded 100 complete games and 37 shutouts.
A 10-time All-Star, Johnson led his league in strikeouts nine times and had a career total of 4,875, second all-time only to Nolan Ryan. He finished his career with 668 doubles and had more than 1,000 extra-base hits.
Smoltz was a starter and reliever during his 21-year, career. He took over as Houstons regular catcher in 1989.
Not to be outdone, Astros legend Craig Biggio will inducted this year as well after putting together an iconic career in Houston over the course of the 90s and into the 2000s.
Two years later, he made his first All-Star team, then was asked to make the improbable transition to play second base in 1992 in an effort to lengthen his career.
While several former Astros are already in the Hall, Biggio will be the first to be inducted as a member of the franchise.
We zipped up the catchers gear and didnt look back, Biggio said. “I believed in myself, and we made it work”.
