Craig Kimbrel: Yankees considered favorite to land Kimbrel
The New York Yankees are still in the mix for San Diego Padres closer Craig Kimbrel, according to WFAN and CBSSports.com baseball insider Jon Heyman.
The Padres are not eager to move Ross, for obvious reasons.
– Tyson Ross was a “little bit” sore the day after taking a comeback off his right quad, but the Padres right-hander is expected to make his next scheduled start, interim manager Pat Murphy said Thursday.
ESPN’s Jerry Crasnick was the first to report Boston’s interest in Ross, saying the Red Sox have been operating “very quietly”. There is also a $13-million option or a $1 million for 2018.
After trading Steve Cishek, it remains unclear if the Marlins would be open to moving another bullpen piece. Some execs thought the team would go for Price and try to flip Wood for him, but clearly that is not happening.
The Dodgers also are known to have inquired about Ross, but the Padres would be reluctant to trade him within the division.
Ross garnered a 2.81 ERA in his All-Star campaign last season, and over his six-year career, his ERA stands at 3.63. If a trade is finalized, expect the Red Sox to potentially relinquish control of Triple-A pitchers Brian Johnson or Henry Owens, Double-A outfielder Manuel Margot, or Single-A third baseman Rafael Devers, just 18 years of age. Ross is getting some major attention and according to Ken Rosenthal, the Cubs are looking at Ross and that the pitcher is the “focus” of talks between the teams. The Jays and Tigers are actually very close in the standings, but the Tigers reportedly are getting ready to retool moving forward. But Cole Hamels, David Price and Mike Leake were all dealt elsewhere this week as the Bombers have been unwilling to unload any of their top four prospects.
