He told BBC Radio Scotland’s John Beattie programme: “My understanding is that it appears that this auto has come off the road at some point on Sunday and that a call was made to Police Scotland”.
An investigation is under way into how the force failed to act on a phone call from a member of the public that a Renault Clio had gone off the M9 motorway at Stirling.
“All callers to 101 receive an electronic options menu. Following a call this morning, officers attended the scene”, he said.
“It has come to light that a call was made to police late on Sunday morning regarding a auto which was reported as being off the road”, it said in a statement.
However, it has since emerged the force received a report on Sunday morning about a vehicle which was off the road – Mr Yuill’s Renault Clio – but it is understood the person who took the call did not pass it on to staff who would investigate.

Sir Stephen continued: “Shortly before 10am on July 8 2015 a second call was made to Police Scotland via the 101 system”.
Mr Yuill had custody of his two sons who had been staying with their mother in Edinburgh.
“It is right that the Police Investigations and Review Commissioner (PIRC) is investigating the matter but that may not be enough”.
The case has been referred to the Police Investigations and Review Commissioner.
“All further detail going forward will therefore be a matter for the Crown Office and the Pirc”.
But officers didn’t investigate a report of the crash until three days later when they found the body of Mr Yuill and Miss Bell lying alongside him.
Mrs Bell said Lamara is in an induced coma with a brain injury and she was not sure if she would survive.
His girlfriend Lamara Bell was finally found in the wreckage of their auto yesterday.
She told the Scottish Sun: “She will be in hospital for a good few months”. We thought (when) she didn’t turn up, she was somewhere else.
“She’s happy-go-lucky and has a great personality”.
Last night, a neighbour said she was at hospital with her daughter and was “heartbroken”.
Andrew Bell, reported to be Ms Bell’s father, said he had passed by M9 site on Sunday as the family said they were raging and disgusted by the handling of the case.
“Sorry as I write this I am crying my eyes out”.
“I can’t for the life of me finish it, I just want her to move her hand as I hold hers”.
He added: “You walk in and you see your child on life support”.
