Creator of the Broadway hit ‘Hamilton’ says goodbye, quietly
A video of the final curtain call was posted on the Hamilton: An American Musical Facebook page.
Rose called the performance “a majestic moment in the history of theater” and historian Ron Chernow, who helped Miranda turn Hamilton’s story into a musical, remained surprised at the show’s success.
Variety reports Aaron Paul, Jane Fonda, John Kerry, Rosie O’Donnell, Mariska Hargitay, Edward Norton and Jennifer Lopez were among those in attendance at the Richard Rodgers Theater.
“Teach ’em how to say goodbye”, Miranda wrote on Twitter beside a photo of his hair’s remains.
Fans came from as far as Florida and California to catch Miranda’s final performance. With each subsequent wave of bows, the group stepped back to highlight the other cast members who are also leaving the show: Leslie Odom, Jr. and Phillipa Soo.
A Chicago production of the show, which won 11 Tony awards last month, is set to debut in the fall, while a touring production will kick off in 2017 before moving to Los Angeles.
That’s good news for Miranda, who told PEOPLE in the press room of the 2016 Tony Awards that he plans to return to Hamilton occasionally.
Stacie Berman, a Brooklynite who has seen the show twice, said she planned to sell four tickets to the show she had bought for September to help pay for her $2,000 ticket to Mr. Miranda’s final night.
Lin-Manuel Miranda ended his run in “Hamilton” on July 9 – and immediately afterward chopped of his signature long locks, which he’d grown out to play the role in the musical he created. He composed the score to the new Disney animated musical Moana, out in November, and will soon begin filming the live-action Mary Poppins sequel alongside Emily Blunt.
