Crews resume Wisconsin lake search
Authorities searched the lake after Weinstein and three friends were reported missing – their canoe overturned – Sunday morning, Roberts said.
The cold water and weather have combined to make searching hard, Walworth County Sheriff Kurt Picknell said.
According to authorities, the four men ranged from 20-23 years old. Sack previously attended KU and was last enrolled in fall 2014, KU officials said. Mill Lake is located on the north end of Lake Beulah near East Troy.
In a story January 4 about the search for IL men who went missing at a Wisconsin lake, The Associated Press, based on information from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, misspelled the name of one of the men, who was found dead. A third was recovered Monday afternoon at the lake about 35 miles southwest of Milwaukee.
A group of about 16 had gathered at the lake house for the weekend, and the four men headed outside about 2:30 a.m. Sunday, the Tribune reported. Authorities didn’t find any life jackets in the water.
Two bodies were found Sunday.
Two bodies were recovered from the lake Sunday evening and were identified as Lanny Patrick Sack, 20, and Christopher McQuillen, 21. Roberts said alcohol was involved but it’s unclear if that was a factor in the deaths, which he said appeared to be “a confluence of bad choices that ended rather tragically on this New Year’s”. The two other men remain missing.
Officials offer these safety tips for anyone planning to enjoy Wisconsin’s natural resources – notably activities around ice or open water – during the winter. Don’t travel in areas you are not familiar and don’t travel at night or during reduced visibility. Identification is pending the Walworth County Medical Examiner notification process. Wienstein was found at 2:33 p.m. Monday. The search continues for the fourth missing individual.
