Cricket India all out for 631 in fourth England Test
Root also dropped Yadav on eight off James Anderson, compounding England’s problems.
Jonny Bairstow was unbeaten on 50.
It was to Root’s great credit that he achieved and partially sustained his objective, passing his half-century with a reverse-sweep for his seventh four from 75 balls.
The thing with this India team, though, is that they find ways to pull rabbits out of the hat via their chief magicians Kohli and Ashwin. It will take a hundred from Bairstow and serious support from everyone else for this to be anything other than a series-claiming victory for India.
As he has been throughout the series, Ravichandran Ashwin proved their nemesis, taking all four wickets to fall and boost his tally for the series to 27 in the process. He then added 39 runs with Ben Stokes (18) for the fifth wicket. India had been 364-7 at one stage – they ended on 631. “I was laughing about it, but Ashwin was not too impressed”, Kohli told media persons. Talking about that phase, Yadav said: “They were attacking me more and they had a very defensive field against Virat”.
Anderson added: “I enjoyed watching (them) bat”. We are not going to bat for a draw.
“We’re going to come here tomorrow and try to fight our way back into the game if we can”, said Anderson. We tried to stay patient against him, but he just waits and waits and waits.
Kohli, who has enjoyed a record-breaking year, passed 1,000 Test runs for 2016 and 4,000 for his career during his time at the crease on Saturday.
“It was immensely frustrating”. Coming to the ground this morning, we needed to get three wickets.
“Anderson felt a bit guilty and asked us to talk after the match gets over”.
“I have always been a handy batsman, ever since started playing in junior cricket”.
It took him seven and a half hours to scale the landmark and he had hit 23 fours in the 302 balls he faced when he achieved the feat. But before that, he did manage to surpass former Test skipper MS Dhoni as the captain with the highest individual score for India.
The five-wicket haul was the 24th for the world’s top-ranked test bowler and his seventh 10-wicket haul, after the 30-year-old also took six wickets in England’s first innings, inspired India to an unassailable 3-0 lead.
This was the seventh time when an Indian batsman was able to score 600-plus runs in a test series.
In the second session, Yadav completed his maiden test hundred off 194 deliveries. The ball sits up to get hit.
The coach especially kept an eye on the technical adjustments they had chose to make before the fourth Test. Kohli stood on the middle stump to James Anderson and Chris Woakes while using an open-chested stance when leg-spinner Adil Rashid came on. Dhoni held the record with his 224 against Australia in Chennai in 2013.
The skipper became more aggressive after the fall of Yadav, and was caught at the cover boundary off Chris Woakes.
Keaton Jennings, who scored a century on his Test debut in the first innings, went for a golden duck, out lbw off Indian medium pace bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar.
The entire morning belonged to Kohli and Jayant as they put paid to the England hopes of restricting the home side’s lead to the minimum with forthright batting.
Kohli and Jayant’s punishing partnership was a case in point, as well as a proud achievement for the Indian pair.
