Cristiano Ronaldo: Confusion over whether he deserves Real Madrid goal scoring
Spanish giants Real Madrid honoured their record breaking Cristiano Ronaldo with a special awards for becoming club’s all-time leading goal scorer in the presence of President Florentino Perez, team-mates and family members on Friday.
After Ronaldo scored his 501st goal in Madrid’s 2-0 victory over Malmo on Wednesday, the Ballon d’Or victor was asked about Gerard Pique’s controversial comments.
They argue that Ronaldo’s shot against Real Sociedad five years ago, which looped over the wall and into the net after deflecting off of Pepe’s back, belongs to the Portuguese, not his Brazilian teammate.
But speaking at the event organised by the club, who have themselves awarded the disputed goal to Ronaldo, the 30-year-old spoke with pride about being associated with players such as Raul and Alfredi Di Stefano.
“I would never have imagined when I put on this shirt for the first time that I would be the team’s best goal scorer”, Ronaldo said at a presentation at the Bernabeu stadium where he received a trophy marking his achievement.
“I’d also like to thank my coaches”.
I’m very happy. In the first place I would like to thank my team-mates, because without them, this never would have been possible.
“[Finally, I’d like to thank] my agent, mother and President for this attractive act”.
“I also thank the media, because I know that lately I’ve been a little b****** with them, but it’s my way of being. Thank you everyone. Hala Madrid!”
On Tuesday night, Real manager Rafael Benitez said: “If we’re talking about the history of Real Madrid and the club’s goalscorers, it’s worth pointing out that he has needed less time to achieve this feat and that makes what he’s doing all the more remarkable”.
Ronaldo told the reporter: “You know why I don’t speak more often?”
