Cruz ‘bromance’ is over, NY billionaire says
Cruz’s issues with New Yorkers – who, he said Thursday, are “socially liberal, pro-gay marriage, pro-abortion, focused on money and the media” – have not deterred him from tapping the city’s wealthier citizens at a number of fundraisers.
Do you think Ted Cruz has any chance of beating out Donald Trump for the presidential nomination?
The Daily News front page said “Drop Dead, Ted”, and had a cartoon of the Statue of Liberty flipping the bird at the Texas senator. “When the World Trade Center came down I saw something that no place on earth could have handled more beautifully, more humanely than New York”, Trump responded. Since last night, his campaign had spun the “New York values” line as a way to open up culture war attacks on Trump, a thrice-married celebrity billionaire who has scored high with evangelical voters despite showing no interest in gay marriage and only fitful interest in defunding Planned Parenthood.
Campaigning in Iowa, Trump told CNN it was “a very serious thing” that Cruz failed to disclose up to $1 million in loans from Goldman Sachs in the public finance reports of his 2012 Senate campaign.
Borough President James Oddo touched on the comments with a series of tweets and the hashtag #NewYorkValues. “It came from Donald J. Trump”, Cruz said.
Republican frontrunner Donald Trump has attacked Ted Cruz over his birth in Canada, saying it raises questions about his presidential eligibility. I apologize to the millions of New Yorkers who have been abandoned by liberal political.
“You are an American, as is everyone on this stage”, Cruz said.
He then scolded Cuomo for his remarks that people who don’t embrace his liberal values are not true New Yorkers.
Trump invoked 9/11 in a fiery response that drew loud applause from the debate audience.
“I, and some of the other widows, would love to give him a tour and talk to him about how NY came together and America came together”, he told ABC News.
And I said, “well, if he wanted to play a song, maybe he could play, “New York, New York”?”
The use of “New York values” as a term of abuse rankled plenty of city residents. We do believe in E Pluribus Unum, out of many one and his rhetoric is the exact opposite.
Until the latest debate, Trump and Cruz had been friendly because they have both been seeking to appeal to conservatives in the Tea Party movement and did not want to anger them.
