Cruz extends Iowa lead among 2016 US Republican hopefuls
“I’m disappointed” by reports that party leaders, at a recent dinner in Washington, talked about the possibility that at the nominating convention this summer officials could band together to try to block him from winning, Trump said in an interview with CNN’s Jake Tapper aired Sunday.
It’s an escalation of a fight between the two candidates that comes as polls in Iowa and nationally show Cruz picking up Carson’s support as the retired brain surgeon – once briefly the GOP’s front-runner – sinks to fourth place, behind Donald Trump, Cruz and Florida Sen. Support for Trump increased two points from the last poll to 21 percent, although he still fell short of his peak support of 23 percent in August.
Podesta’s remarks – which he made sure to say represent his own views, not an official campaign position – came after the real-estate magnate proposed a blanket ban on Muslims entering the United States, and Podesta suggested that the resulting surge of attention being paid to Trump didn’t change his belief that Cruz was the likeliest pick.
“I was against going into Iraq”, Trump said. “But I think the time will come to an end pretty soon, it sounds like”.
The poll by Bloomberg and Des Moines Register, released on Saturday, showed Mr Cruz leading in Iowa with 31 per cent of those likely to attend the Republican caucuses, while Mr Trump received 21 per cent.
Trump also praised his “strong temperament”.
