Cruz Says He Won’t Be A ‘Servile Puppy Dog’ To Trump Campaign
The intrigue is whether Trump’s campaign egged on delegates to boo Cruz, knowing from the speech’s prepared text that no endorsement was forthcoming.
The sense of passionate conflict among Texans Thursday was a microcosm of the friction on the convention floor Wednesday night.
Some other Missouri delegates also were displeased.
Not since the parties and their nominees began carefully scripting these quadrennial affairs a generation ago have we seen such an outburst of dueling egos and counterproductive emotion.
Did we say we wanted more sense of drama?
Interrupted by chants of “Trump, Trump, Trump”, Cruz paused and said with a smile, “I appreciate the enthusiasm of the NY delegation”. The candidate’s son called the performance “silly” and inappropriate. Trump will close out his convention Thursday in Cleveland.
On CNN Thursday morning Donald Trump Jr., who spoke at the convention Tuesday night, made it clear where the Trump campaign now stands on waiting for a Cruz endorsement.
It also enraged the nominee’s backers in the hall.
As for the party whose top goal this week was to project unity behind Trump, Republican delegates tried to assert that Cruz’s speech wouldn’t hurt them.
“I was hoping he was going to get over that hump to say we should support our nominee”. He did not even take the easy way out of backing “our ticket” or urging a straight Republican ballot.
Her comment on Cruz was giant dose of hypocrisy; telling an active Senator that he should give up his career is rich considering that she hasn’t had a career for years, yet continues to spout her political opinions daily.
Or he could have gone the route of other former rivals who have remained candidly aloof. But many delegates have come around to supporting Trump at this point in the race. Texas delegates, a stronghold for Cruz, were among those on their feet joining the chorus, reflecting a big reversal from the sustained cheers he got when he arrived on stage.
Trump was trying to be generous in allowing Cruz to speak in a prime slot. The most important speech of his life will bring down the balloons on a convention marked by divided loyalties and unwanted distractions. Tonight he calculated that not endorsing the Republican nominee will be good for him.
Two vanquished Republican presidential hopefuls, Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker and Florida Sen. While I believe in the right to have an abortion, free healthcare and free education, Cruz wants to defund Planned Parenthood, repeal Obamacare, and dismantle the Department of Education. “Every vote that is not for Trump is a vote for Clinton”.
It’s the kind of thing, she said, that could come back to haunt him when he runs for re-election in 2018.
But Cruz would have none of these alternatives.
Pence lauded Trump is his own man, an independent spirit, and said change in the country will be “huge” under his presidency.
Another yelled “The party has spoken!” at Cruz as he was speaking to the delegation. Now he seems equally fine to be loathed by Trump and his supporters.
But “I think (Cruz) lost all of those people” by failing to endorse Trump, Burlison said.
Trump had repeatedly mocked Cruz throughout the campaign as “Lyin’ Ted”, disparaged the appearance of Cruz’s wife, Heidi, and insinuated that Cruz’s father had indirect links to John F. Kennedy’s assassin, Lee Harvey Oswald.
